The mainstream dry pet food on the market mainly includes high-temperature extruded kibble and cold-extruded kibble. They differ in forming principles and product features, and suit different formula positioning and market demands.
High-temperature extrusion is processed at 120–180℃ under high pressure. Raw materials are fully cooked and rapidly expanded to form a loose porous structure. High temperature can effectively eliminate harmful microorganisms. The finished products have a long shelf life with high production efficiency, making it the mainstream solution for mass production. However, high heat tends to degrade heat-sensitive nutrients such as vitamins and probiotics. Extra nutrient supplementation is usually needed, and oil spraying is widely used to improve palatability.
Cold extrusion is carried out at low temperature. Materials are compacted by mechanical force without drastic expansion, resulting in dense pellets. Low-temperature processing retains natural meat flavor and active nutrients as much as possible, which is ideal for premium formulas with high meat content, grain-free ingredients and probiotics. The pellets will not expand sharply after absorbing water, which is gentler on pets’ digestive tracts. This process requires stricter hygiene standards for raw materials.
For formula design, high-temperature extrusion relies heavily on starch gelatinization for stable expansion. Cold extrusion needs less starch and allows a higher proportion of fresh meat, bringing greater formula flexibility.
Neither process is inherently better. They serve different positioning. High-temperature extrusion is suitable for high-volume, cost-effective products, while cold extrusion works well for premium pet food focusing on high meat content and nutrient retention.
Topline TLTE series cold extrusion machines realize precise temperature control. Compatible with fresh meat, meat meal and grain-free formulas, the equipment steadily produces uniformly shaped cold-extruded pet food to help customers develop premium pet food.
